SPECIFYING TIRE PROFILES

4/16/2019

MotoSPEC PRO licenses can specify tire profiles in order to consider the effects of lean angle on the geometry of the motorcycle.

An
explanation of the effects of lean angle and tire profiles can be found in the post 'EFFECTS OF TIRE PROFILE WITH LEAN ANGLE'.

  • The tire profiles are specified as an ellipse and assumed to be rigid (not deforming with load).
  • The Centre Radius, Vertical Radius and Horizontal Radius define the profile.
  • The following are not currently specified or considered:
    • deformation with load
    • tire growth at speed
    • tire pressure
  • Vertical and Horizontal Radii of 0.0 mm are applied if not specified.

  • Elliptical profiles for some Dunlop superbike slicks and rain tires are shown in the image above.
  • Profiles for Dunlop, Pirelli, Michelin and Bridgestone tires are available by logging into the MotoSPEC website, with a purchased license.
  • If using other tires, please request the profiles from your tire supplier or manufacturer.
  • For street or roadracing tires, if the elliptical profile is not available, the profile can be approximated with a circular profile  using major and minor radii equal to half the width of the tire.
  • For example: for a 125 mm wide tire, use 62.5 mm major and minor radii.
  • There will be some difference in calculated results between circular and elliptical profiles

The illustration below demonstrates the tire profile dimensions:
